A Journey of Hope: How PEAK is Transforming Lives in Marsabit

In the heart of Marsabit, a story of hope, resilience, and transformation is unfolding. It begins with Safia Shariff Soy, a woman born and raised in this arid region of Northern Kenya, who overcame unimaginable challenges to become a beacon of light for her community. Her journey, captured beautifully in her memoir, “Across the Desert,” is not just about her survival—it is about her vision to create a future where vulnerable pastoralists and those affected by tribal conflict can thrive.

Safia’s childhood was marked by poverty, hardship, and deeply entrenched harmful traditional practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Yet, she found the courage to rise above these adversities, seeking education and opportunities abroad. Now living in the United States, Safia’s heart has never strayed from home. Her unwavering dedication to the people of Marsabit led her to establish Pastoralist Empowerment Action, Kenya (PEAK), an organization committed to bringing hope and opportunity to the very communities she grew up in.

Building a Foundation of Kindness

Through PEAK, Safia and her team are addressing critical needs in education, mental health, livelihoods, and healthcare. For them, kindness is not a passive act—it’s a force for change. Safia’s vision for PEAK is grounded in the belief that kindness is strength, capable of healing wounds, fostering trust, and building resilient communities. In a world that can often feel harsh and competitive, Safia reminds us that kindness can transform individuals, relationships, and entire societies.

As Safia says, “By giving back to those less fortunate, we embody true kindness, a power that can bridge gaps and create lasting opportunities for growth.”

Launching PEAK in Marsabit: A Day of Hope

Just four weeks ago, Safia returned to Marsabit for a monumental occasion—the official launch of PEAK. This event was more than just a ceremony; it was the beginning of a transformative journey to uplift lives. Over 200 community members came together, a testament to the hope and unity that PEAK has already inspired in this region.

The highlight of the event was a medical camp organized for internally displaced persons (IDPs), providing critical healthcare services to those who had long been without access. People lined up early in the day, eager for the opportunity to receive care that could dramatically improve their health and well-being.

One participant shared, “The PEAK launch was filled with hope, unity, and a shared vision for a brighter future.”

For many, this event marked the beginning of a new chapter — one where the community can dream of a life beyond survival, where opportunity and dignity are within reach.

 A Memoir that Fuels Change

Safia’s personal story of resilience is powerfully told in her memoir, “Across the Desert.” In this book, Safia chronicles her battle against FGM and the challenges of growing up in a patriarchal society. Yet, her story is not one of despair—it’s one of triumph. Safia has used her journey to inspire change, and her memoir is a critical part of that mission.

Every purchase of “Across the Desert” directly supports PEAK’s initiatives, including educational grants, mental health services, and sustainable livelihood programs. Safia hopes that her story will empower others to take action, whether it’s in their personal lives or in the fight against harmful traditional practices like FGM. “I believe that by sharing my story and founding PEAK, we can inspire others to overcome their struggles and work together to eradicate harmful practices. Together, we can create a brighter, more equitable future for all,” Safia says

Expanding Healthcare Access: A Lifeline for Marsabit

One of PEAK’s most significant contributions to the Marsabit community has been its focus on healthcare. The medical camp organized during the launch served over 200 individuals, providing essential services that many had been deprived of for years. From basic checkups to more specialized treatments, the camp was a lifeline for the people of Marsabit, especially those in the IDP camps.

Lokho, PEAK’s Senior Programme Coordinator, noted the overwhelming success of the camp: “The urgent need for accessible healthcare in pastoralist communities is clear. This medical camp was just the beginning. We are already planning our next initiative to expand our reach and impact even more lives.”

The camp also highlighted the importance of PEAK’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), reinforcing the organization’s long-term commitment to ensuring healthier futures for all.
