Our Founder

Safia Soy
Founder
Safia Soy hails from the remote town of Marsabit in Northern Kenya, where she spent her early years grappling with the challenges faced by girls in the region. As the firstborn in her family, Safia endured the harsh realities of poverty, lacked access to life’s essentials, and faced the threat of female genital mutilation at a young age. Her prospects of education were dimmed, and the cultural norm of early marriage loomed over her, mirroring her mother’s experience of being married off at the tender age of fourteen to a much older man.
Despite these adversities, Safia’s brilliance shone through, and she navigated the hurdles of her childhood. Supported by well-wishers, she excelled in her elementary school exams and was fortunate to secure a government scholarship for her secondary education. Following the completion of her studies, Safia worked as a clerk in Marsabit town, becoming the primary provider for her widowed mother and siblings. The dream of furthering her education persisted, but the responsibilities she bore for her family and the prevailing mindset in her environment limited her aspirations.
Marriage brought its own set of challenges, including a near-death experience and the loss of a child due to the inadequate healthcare in Marsabit. Widowed at a young age, Safia, a resilient woman, single-handedly raised her two boys, holding onto hope amidst life’s trials. Eventually, her journey led her to the United States, where she pursued a career in nursing. Safia remarried and welcomed a baby boy, achieving her American dream while retaining a deep concern for the well-being of the vulnerable in Marsabit.
With a heart dedicated to giving back, Safia that her annual income would not suffice to support the community and her family and so she founded Pastoralist Empowerment Action, Kenya (PEAK), realizing a long-held dream. Collaborating with like-minded individuals, the organization focuses on supporting vulnerable girls and women through mental health interventions, mentorship, livelihood support, and educational grants. This initiative is especially crucial in a community frequently on the brink of tribal conflicts, displacing families including her own. Safia’s life is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of giving back to one’s roots.
